Jobless rate falls in state; Payroll numbers are best in 4 years, but future's unclear

California added 18,300 nonfarm payroll jobs in January and the unemployment rate declined to its lowest level since March 2001, the state Employment Development Department said Friday. The jobless rate was 4.9 percent in January, down from 5.1 percent in December and from 5.8 percent in January 2005.
